Previous Visits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama
In 2007, 2010, and 2013, Emory University hosted major visits of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama in his capacity as Presidential Distinguished Professor (the first university appointment accepted by the 1989 Nobel Peace Laureate). Prior to 2007, His Holiness visited campus three other times. He first visited Emory in 1987, two years before receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, at the invitation of the late John Fenton, professor of religion. His second visit was in September 1995, with Emory as the first stop on a four-city, 12-day visit to the United States in celebration of his 60th year. He received the first President's Medal during that visit and spoke to a crowd of more than 4,000 in the P.E. Center. In 1998 His Holiness the Dalai Lama delivered the 153rd Commencement Address (Real Player video, transcript) and received an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.
